Do you work remotely for a foreign company and dream of living in one of the most comfortable countries in Europe?
The Hungary White Card allows you to legally move to Hungary while keeping your current job, income, and remote lifestyle.
This residence permit was created especially for digital nomads—professionals who can work from anywhere in the world using only a laptop and an internet connection.
What Is the White Card?
The White Card is a special Hungarian residence permit for non-EU citizens who work remotely and receive their income only from outside Hungary.
It allows you to live legally in Hungary without changing your employer or working for the Hungarian job market.
The White Card is a great option for people who want to enjoy life in Europe while continuing to work for a foreign company, run their own business abroad, or work with clients from around the world.

Who Can Apply for the White Card?
The White Card is available to non-EU citizens who meet several important requirements.
You may be eligible for the White Card if you:
work fully remotely
use digital technologies to perform your job
work only for a foreign employer or your own company registered outside Hungary
have a stable, proven net income of at least EUR 3,000 per month, and can show proof of this income for at least the last 6 months
have sufficient financial resources to support yourself while living in Hungary
do not plan to work for a Hungarian employer
intend to live in Hungary while continuing your work or business activities outside the country
Important: The White Card does not allow you to work for a Hungarian employer or earn income from any business or employment activities carried out in Hungary.
Who Is Considered a Digital Nomad?
A digital nomad is a professional who can work entirely remotely, regardless of where they live.
The White Card is most commonly issued to:

IT specialists
software developers
designers
marketing professionals
business and data analysts
consultants
finance professionals
online teachers
translators
copywriters
e-commerce specialists
owners of online businesses registered outside Hungary
and other professionals whose work does not require them to be physically present in an office.
Who Can You Work For?
One of the main requirements of the White Card is that your source of income must come from outside Hungary.
You can work:
as an employee of a foreign company
through your own company registered outside Hungary
as a self-employed professional or sole proprietor registered outside Hungary
under service or freelance contracts with foreign clients
Benefits of the White Card
With a White Card, you can:
legally live in Hungary for the duration of your residence permit
freely enter and leave Hungary
travel within the Schengen Area in accordance with the applicable rules
continue working remotely without changing your employer
run your own foreign business
access most public and private services available to foreigners legally residing in Hungary
What Are the Limitations?
Although the White Card offers many benefits, it also comes with several important restrictions.
As a White Card holder, you:
cannot work under an employment contract with a Hungarian employer
cannot run a business through a company registered in Hungary or as a Hungarian sole proprietor
must receive your income exclusively from foreign sources
must work only in a remote format
must have valid health insurance and proof of accommodation in Hungary
must continue to meet all the conditions on which your White Card was granted throughout its validity.
There are also two important limitations to keep in mind:
Family reunification is not available under the White Card.
The time spent in Hungary with a White Card does not count towards the residence period required to obtain an EU long-term residence permit.
Important: If you no longer meet the requirements of the White Card, your residence permit may not be renewed and may be revoked.
How to Apply
The application process depends on where you are located at the time of submission
Applying Through a Hungarian Consulate
If you are outside Hungary, you must submit your application in person at the Hungarian consulate in the country where you legally reside.
Applying in Hungary
Citizens of countries that are eligible for visa-free entry, as well as foreign nationals who are legally staying in Hungary, may apply from within Hungary if permitted under the applicable immigration regulations.
Why Is It Important to Prepare Your Documents Correctly?

In practice, many applications are refused not because the applicant is ineligible for the White Card, but because there is not enough evidence of remote work or a foreign source of income.
The immigration authorities pay particular attention to:
documents proving that you work remotely
the source of your income
the regularity of your income
whether your work meets the requirements of the White Card program
the completeness and consistency of your application package
For this reason, it is important to review your case before applying to make sure you meet all legal requirements and have sufficient supporting documents for a successful application.
